Sakura
For the past two decades, Sandra Kantanen has explored landscape photography, drawing inspiration from Chinese and Japanese traditions of landscape painting and their perspectives on nature. Combining photography with digital techniques, Kantanen transforms her images through colour, distortion, blur and painterly interventions. By stretching pixels to resemble brushstrokes, she creates dreamlike landscapes in which it becomes difficult to distinguish between what was photographed and what was created by the artist. Her Sakura series, created in Japan, turns to the fleeting spectacle of cherry blossoms, dissolving their forms into fields of colour and light that reflect on time, renewal and the transient nature of the landscape.
