The body of work produced by Maanantai Collective is the result of
creative processes undertaken by 'one common author and sixteen eyes',
as the Collective puts it. This group of young photographers challenges
the notion of authorship; it therefore comes as no surprise that
individual names remain in the background in Maanantai's public presence
as a collective whole. The series Nine Names Mountains is a group adventure in the classic road-trip genre, a poetic and absurdist
exploration of distance and scale. The assembled works reveal the
intertwining of many stories.
The material used was passed from one
artist to the other and reinterpreted collectively. Weaving together an
eclectic array of literary references, different objects, and multiple
media - including analog photography, video stills, laser prints,
drawings, and mobile phone shots - these works show the traces of random
experiences, chance observations, and improvised happenings.
